Thruport Wins with Bid on Historic
Technology
CEO Bruce Waldack Wins Prototype Segway on ebay
Alexandria, VA, April 10, 2002 -- Thruport
Technologies, Inc. an application service and managed hosting
provider, announced today that founder and CEO Bruce Waldack
was ebay's winning bidder on a prototype Segway, one of three
limited edition Human Transporters auctioned by Segway founder
and inventor Dean Kamen.
Waldack's bid of $106,500 closed the
March 28th auction and will move the Segway from Los Angeles,
CA to Thruport's Alexandria, VA headquarters. The purchase
was made as "an investment in an exciting summer," says Waldack.
He notes, "it's very easy for (Thruport employees) to become
fixated on keyboards and monitors. The Segway is a great escape
- a reminder that technology isn't static„it's a tool for
liberation."
The Segway is the latest manifestation
of Waldack's fascination with historic technology. He also
owns the original Macintosh computer, and has sought to acquire
a Cray supercomputer. Waldack himself played a role in Internet
history, having owned and managed a pioneering firm that eventually
became the world's largest Web hosting facility.
